Senior Research Fellow
My name is Fabrice Lucien, PhD and I am a senior research fellow at Mayo Clinic.
I am a cancer cell biologist with significant knowledge in tumor metabolism, metastasis and drug resistance. I am currently being trained in translational cancer research by developing next-generation liquid biopsies for prognostication and prediction of therapeutic response in urological cancers. I have developed an innovative “liquid biopsy” based on enumeration of submicron cell fragments called extracellular vesicles (EVs) that bear tissue and cancer-specific biomarkers. Clinical applicability of EV research is hindered by the lack of high-throughput instrumentation and reproducible pre-analytical and analytical procedures. I am working towards developing a standard operating procedure using dedicated (high-resolution/nanoscale) flow cytometry for EV analysis. This lays the foundation for various EV-based blood biopsies to be used in a clinical setting.
I am also investigating the functional roles of tumor-derived EVs in immune-evasion and drug resistance using pan-omics analysis of patient-derived tumors. By using innovative in vitro and in vivo 3D tumor models, this work will give new insight on underlying mechanisms of drug resistance and pave the way for identification of clinically-relevant biomarker signatures that can be further exploited in a liquid biopsy format.
