Markus Graefen is Professor of Urology & Chairman of Martini-Klinik, Prostate Cancer Center at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. The Martini-Clinic was founded in 2005 under the roof of the University of Hamburg and has developed to one of the leading Prostate Cancer Centers worldwide. About 5000 men are consulting the clinic every year and about 2500 radical prostatectomies are annually performed.
Prof. Graefens expertise lies in robotic and open prostatectomies as well as in seed implantation and HDR-brachtherapy. Another focus of interest lies in the implementation of quality assurance programs for prostate cancer treatment. Prof.Graefen has established a prostate cancer database im Hamburg with now overseeing the data of over 30.000 patients treated for PCa and which is based on the results of life-long patient reported outcome measurements. This database is used for evaluating the efficacy and comparison of therapeutic options as well as for internal quality controls of the single treating physicians.
Prof.Graefen studied medicine at the University of Bonn, Germany and the University of California, San Diego. He worked in general surgery at Blackburn and Edinburgh and finished his education as a urologist at the University of Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Furthermore he worked as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York together with Peter Scardino and Michael Kattan.
Prof.Graefen has published about 600 peer reviewed papers mainly in the field of prostate cancer. Beside many other activities he is member of the German guideline committee on prostate cancer, Editorial Board Member at European Urology, Board Member of the German “Association of Urologic Oncology” and Member of the Scientific Board of the Federal Physicians Chamber in Germany.
