Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can control and prevent urolithiasis of various etiologies. Proper medical management includes nutrition counseling specific to the patient's individual risk factors. This course will review for urologists and allied health professionals the different stone-forming mechanisms as they pertain to dietary management. Specifically, methods for prevention of different stone types by nutritional counseling will be presented.

 

Learning Objectives:

• Demonstrate familiarity with the concept of medical nutrition therapy as it applies to nephrolithiasis
• Apply medical nutrition therapy to formulate a plan to decrease stone forming risk in patients with normocalciuric calcium stone disease, hypercalciuria, uric acid stone disease, hyperoxaluria, etc
• Identify common sources of dietary excess where lithogenic components may be recognized and managed
• Review basic and challenging patient scenarios (24 hour urine tests, lab, history) and discuss application of medical nutrition therapy
• Utilize medical nutrition therapy for complicated stone patients, such as those patients with gastric bypass, diabetes, lactose intolerance
