This course will aim to review the current level of knowledge regarding pre-operative, peri-operative and post -operative processes for perineal and/ or transrectal prostate biopsies. There is large variation and non -uniformity regarding antibiotic prophylaxis, pre-operative risk assessment, peri-operative and post operative care. This course will include discussion of the topic of antibiotic prophylaxis as this has become a major cause of concern due to increasing antibiotic resistance to quinolones. Other topics will include intraoperative biopsy technique ands post operative care. Case-based presentations will highlight the pertinent issues and allow for group discussion.

• List the indications for prostate biopsy
• Describe current trends in quinolone antibiotic resistance
• Prescribe appropriate antibiotic therapy for prostate biopsy
• Demonstrate recognition of and treat post prostate biopsy complications
• Discuss the risks, benefits, pros and cons of prostate biopsy with the patient
