Peer review is an essential component of safe radiation therapy delivery and an important aspect of a lifelong learning program for the radiation oncology clinical team. Peer review can take many shapes and forms (e.g., chart rounds, tumor boards) and can occur at various time points in the process of care. Based on RO-ILS data, there is a recurring pattern of errors related to suboptimal plans approved for treatment. This could possibly be mitigated by an enhanced peer review process that provides education and guidance prior to treatment planning. Individual institutions have developed the infrastructure for pre-treatment planning peer review and published results on its impact. But implementing such a program, or other improvements to a peer review program, remains a challenge. The first speaker will provide an overview of peer review, the importance of peer review, and existing societal recommendations (e.g., ASTRO White Paper on Peer Review). Two presenters will discuss their practices' experience with developing a prospective peer review program, the results, and impact on quality of patient care. Lastly, the session will culminate in a review of the challenges and solutions for implementing peer review within smaller and larger practices.
