The session will review new directions in global health in the context of the epidemiologic transition to NCDs. The growing prevalence of NCDs in LMICs is a major challenge for development, and the effects on the achievement of the SDGs make that management of NCD, is increasingly highlighted globally. Examples include the NCD Alliance and the Political Declaration adopted at the third UN High Level Meeting on NCDs. New global initiatives have been at the forefront of the world stage, for example the UN Interagency Task Force on NCDs, the UN Joint Global Programme on Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control or the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.
It is essential for the radiation oncology community to be involved at the ground level to make sure that radiotherapy is available and has a place in these global initiatives. Without this involvement, access to radiotherapy may be impeded due to inaccurate perception of the costs and affordability of this technique and to the lack of knowledge about indications/outcomes and the economic/societal benefits of radiotherapy. These misperceptions are across the board from policy makers, and public health experts to physicians and healthcare providers.
The session aims at outlining actions that the healthcare community can take to improve the outcome of cervical cancer and to inform policymakers. Highlighting the need to address opportunities in the prevention and management of cervix cancer, the session will provide guidance on cervix cancer management and will discuss the role of radiotherapy, while showcasing examples of collaboration.
