EDU 03 - Clinical Implications of the Immunobiology of Radiation

In this session, speakers will review different aspects of the immunobiology of radiation including how radiation activates anti-tumor immunity, immune regulation of radiation-induced anti-tumor immunity and impact of radiation-induced inflammation on the efficacy and toxicity of combinations of radiation with immunotherapy. In particular, the first portion of this session will examine our understanding of the mechanisms by which radiation activates the immune system including type I interferons, toll-receptor signaling and dendritic cell activation. The second portion of this session will discuss mechanisms that limit radiation-induced inflammation including macrophages and TGF-beta. The third portion of this session will discuss how our understanding of the immune response triggered by radiation can help us better incorporate radiation with immunotherapy by addressing issues such as timing and fractionation. The final segment of this session is directed at understanding the mechanisms by which radiation can enhance the toxicity of immunotherapy.
