As we make clinical advances from the metaphorical bench to bedside, these improvements are not reaching all of our patients equally in the community. Certain populations, including the African-American, Latinx, Native American and sexual and gender minority communities, experience health disparities in oncologic care. These disparities may have a unique impact in radiation oncology. ASTRO's journal Advances in Radiation Oncology has recently initiated a series examining this topic in articles on the impact of disparities on delivery and outcomes in radiation therapy. Additionally, ASCO has recently released policy statements on strategies for reducing cancer health disparities among minority populations. Better understanding of how these disparities may manifest in minority populations and how they may impact clinical oncologic care in radiation oncology is essential for improving health equity. During this session, attendees will hear from experts on the challenges facing these minority communities, how this may impact cancer care in radiation oncology, and what we can do as a field to help.
