Particle therapy has increasingly been used for the treatment of head & neck cancer in clinics affiliated with particle centers. As a limited resource in a selected number of centers, it is crucial to identify patients who may benefit from particle therapy and counsel them on expectations of treatment, in terms of acute- and long-term side effects, as well as cancer control. There are ongoing prospective studies, including several randomized trials, to assess the relative benefits versus photon-based treatment.
In this session, radiation oncologists who specialize in particle therapy for head & neck cancer will provide guidance on patient selection, understanding and assessing comparative plans, details of target delineation and dosing, logistics of treatment planning (including needs for verification scans and triggers for re-planning), and both expected and unexpected toxicities. They will use specific case examples to illustrate patients who are best served by particle therapy (and those who are not) and provide guidance for physicians who treat with particles and those who refer for particle therapy.
- Identify patients who would be best served by particle therapy for head & neck cancer.
- Discuss optimal dose, target, and technique for particle therapy treatment for head & neck cancer.
- Discuss expected toxicities from particle therapy for head & neck cancer.
