To educate the audience on aspects specific to proton therapy planning and delivery, the session will cover first basic proton physics fro clinicians (beam delivery and dose deposition differences compared to photons). This will include an introduction into the terminology used in proton therapy. Next, uncertainties in planning and delivery (for proton therapy treating moving and non-moving targets) will be outlined that illustrate differences to photon planning and delivery. Finally, aspects of proton biology (i.e. relative biological effectiveness (RBE)) pertaining to treatment planning will be discussed. The session will particularly focus on scanned proton beams as used in most centers.
