All teams experience conflict. As quality professionals, we are often exposed to this conflict and are expected to deal productively with it. Whether working with cross-disciplinary teams for process improvement, kaizens, audits, or paired with suppliers/customers, we can influence team outcomes and help build interpersonal relationships.
Team conflict does not have to be negative; at its best, it can increase options, guide successful change outcomes, build team capacity for creativity, and lead to innovation. The best teams have conflicts but they treat conflicts as an opportunity to learn and as transformative, divergent dialogue.
To lead teams, quality professionals need to build their own awareness for team dynamics and help determine when best to intercede in conflicts. We must learn how to use basic quality tools together with conflict resolution tools in a team setting to generate productive dialogue.
