In 2016, the acting director of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) made a commitment to implement a quality management system (QMS) in all USGS laboratories, beginning with energy laboratories within the energy and minerals mission area. The director’s commitment included establishing a fully functional QMS in all energy laboratories by June 2018. An implementation team was formed to develop a plan to accomplish that goal and implement the plan to completion. The team began by asking two questions. What kind of QMS should the USGS implement? How will the implementation team manage this large-scale change? Come to this session and follow the journey from planning through implementation of the first QMS within USGS energy laboratories. Come hear what worked, what didn’t work, and about other changes the USGS will implement through 2024 that are being informed by these lessons learned from implementing a QMS in energy laboratories.
