After many police shootings, communities create memorial landscapes composed of flowers, photographs, and other remembrances. However, permanent memorials are often opposed by local authorities. In this session, designers and leaders who have fought for memorials will share their stories and lessons learned from success and from continuing opposition.

Learning Objectives:

• Use the design process to bring the community together and support healing and justice.
• Gain local government support for memorializing victims of shooting by local government employees.
• Learn how to organize and design for the right balance of healing and justice while meeting other immediate community needs.
• Explore how to reflect the authenticity and local culture of community-created memorials in permanent designs.
