Public parks and playgrounds have vital roles in promoting inclusion, physical activity, and health for all. This session will present evidence-based approaches that position landscape architects as critical contributors to enhanced holistic public park and play space design that meets the needs of a wide range of children.

Learning Objectives:

• Apply evidence-based fundamentals of play to practical and functional design that supports sensorimotor development.
• Apply evidence-based fundamentals of play to functional design that supports cognitive and social development.
• Interpret research on enhanced physical activity and social competence in inclusively designed outdoor open spaces.
• Apply design principles that promote holistic play and advocate for ongoing evidence as applicable to inclusive design of outdoor play environments.
