Join fellow drawing enthusiasts for a day of on-location sketching in maritime San Diego. Special focus will be on using watercolor techniques for quick studies. Bring favorite drawing materials and comfortable walking shoes; handmade watercolor sketchbooks, micropalettes, and brushes will be provided. Participants’ sketchbooks will be displayed at ASLA Central.

$115 per person by July 12; $130 after July 12; includes handmade watercolor sketchbook, micropalettes, brushes, and water. Lunch on your own. Extensive walking.

Learning Objectives:

• Explore some of San Diego’s urban landscape architecture and history during a downtown walking route.
• Discover a variety of the best road-tested materials for on-the-fly watercolor sketching and quick watercolor techniques that can be used as a visual communication tool for landscape architectural design explorations.
• Use thumbnails, rapid sketching, and other field techniques to quickly explore alternative compositions and to select a strong central sketch idea.
• Learn strategies for editing, composition, detail, and color to simplify and capture complex street scenes.
