Track 1: Effects of Climate Change in Warm Weather Coastal Regions
Across the globe, more than 50% of the population lives in coastal areas and most of these coastlines are densely populated. In addition, coastal areas are home to species and habitats that provide many benefits to society and natural ecosystems. The value of coastal and ocean activities to the economic viability of many countries is profound, including tourism, marine transportation of goods, offshore energy drilling, resource extraction, fish cultivation, recreation, etc. In many of these locations across the globe, such vulnerable coastal communities are also home to vast natural and cultural resources. However, these coasts are increasingly sensitive to effects of climate change including sea level rise, changes in the frequency and intensity of storms, increases in precipitation, and warmer ocean temperatures. Therefore, it is paramount to implement plans for evaluating, prioritizing, and preserving such threatened resources.
This plenary session will describe how climate change is projected to affect coastal areas, the data being used to make these predictions, methods for assessing the vulnerability of cultural heritage, and ways that communities are adapting to expected changes. The session will include a few iconic cities as examples, including Miami, Rome, Florence, and the broader Caribbean region. Speakers will discuss what these communities are doing to create plans for adapting to projected climate change and how they are incorporating the value of cultural heritage into such plans. The speakers will also engage in a moderated discussion after the presentations.

The program addresses safety aspects through discussion of natural hazards and natural resources. The program also addresses welfare through discussion of aspects of building and sites that enable energy efficiency.
