o The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conducted a three-year pilot to improve assessment of infection prevention and control in Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities, hospitals, and during transitions of care.
o In the first year of the pilot, a draft LTC surveyor Infection Control Worksheet (ICWS) was developed, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and tested in 10 nursing homes.
o In the second year of the project, the revised ICWS was piloted during educational surveys at 40 hospitals paired with 40 nursing homes within their referral network, to assess infection prevention and control and communication during transitions of care. All ICWS findings were shared back to facility staff and facilities were offered the option to participate in technical assistance follow-up activities to improve their infection control programs.
o In the third year of the project, 28 nursing homes were re-surveyed.
o All surveys during the three-year pilot were educational surveys conducted by a national contractor.
o This session will cover the description of CMS/CDC activities to assess IPC in nursing homes during this three-year pilot project.
