“A History of Infectious Diseases in Philadelphia” presents a broad overview of the spectrum and impact of infectious diseases in Philadelphia from the earliest days of our republic to the present day. The lecture addresses major epidemic events such as the Yellow Fever outbreak of 1793 and the Influenza pandemic of 1918. Endemic and smaller scale occurrences like the first recognized outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease in 1976 will also be discussed. The impact of these events on the society and the development of public health services in the nation and in Philadelphia will be considered.
