Human factors engineering (HFE) addresses healthcare quality and safety issues, using a human-centric approach to engineer an environment in which the right thing is the easiest thing to do. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has integrated HFE concepts into a variety of harm prevention initiatives, including the standardization of a central line change procedure, reduction of human error in the timing of central line hub scrubs, and assessment of operating room workflow to support hand hygiene. By taking an HFE approach to the design and implementation of interventions, variation is minimized and risk to patients is mitigated.
