As a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), hospital-acquired infection (HAI) surveillance data has been reportable to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for many years via the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This data is then utilized in multiple programs for quality ratings and reimbursement calculations. These programs, such as the Value-Based Payment (VBP), Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) Reduction, and Hospital Compare, use varying methodologies to calculate the final output. This leads to confusion among stakeholders. Infection Preventionists (IPs) are often asked to explain these calculation idiosyncrasies to hospital leadership. This session will describe the methodologies in detail and then provide IPs with the necessary tools to understand and explain the calculations.
