The behavioral health setting offers unique challenges for an IPs. Although the goals of identifying, preventing, and controlling infections are the same as an acute care setting, the environment, and population differences require an IP to be flexible and creative when it comes to developing IPC strategies.
Understanding the special needs of the community and the corresponding institution provides the basis for supporting this population. Building relationships with leadership and maintaining a visible presence within the facility are just two of the important elements in creating a successful behavioral health IPC program.
