This session will focus on the large body of evidence showing that mattresses can still be contaminated after terminal cleaning and demonstrate that mattress failure is both widespread and potentially fatal. There will be a discussion of the change in mattress covers over the past 30 years and how these changes have contributed to the problem.
Participants will review the recent recommendations from the CDC, FDA, ECRI, and hospital manufacturers on the proper cleaning, disinfection, and inspection of hospital mattresses. This interactive session includes:
• An opportunity for participants to engage in a Q&A about their current hospital mattress cleaning and disinfecting processes, and techniques and strategies they can use moving forward.
• A review of the literature surrounding log-reduction of bacteria using quaternary ammonia compounds, bleach, and ultraviolet light and the impact on the failure to eliminate bacteria from the mattress surface.
• A discussion of the possible solutions that environmental services personnel can use to ensure a cleaner surface for patients.
