Through a variety of accelerated review pathways, therapeutic agents are sometimes approved by the Food and Drug Administration with limited data. In these situations, it becomes difficult for payers to determine the true benefit of these agents.

This session will provide perspective on formulary management strategies for assessing and monitoring the use and efficacy of drugs when limited approval information is available. This session will also provide an in-depth review of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) and how ICER reports can be used to assist in evaluating these agents for formulary consideration.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the advantages and challenges of having therapeutic agents approved by the Food and Drug Administration with limited data.
2. Discuss how limited efficacy data impacts formulary management of a therapeutic agent.
3. Define the role of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER).
4. Summarize how ICER reports are developed and their potential role in providing information for drugs approved with limited information.
5. Describe a strategy that uses ICER reports to efficiently review therapeutic agents for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee consideration.
