Workforce and Leadership Development
Cavity Free Iowa is a new medical-dental initiative focused on prevention and early oral health care. Recognizing that young children often see their primary care provider for regular well-child visits, the goal of Cavity Free Iowa is to increase the number of young children receiving preventive oral health services and dental referrals. The initiative was launched in 2017 by the Iowa Department of Public Health in collaboration with pediatric physician champions and Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. Key to the success of this initiative is the collaboration between dental hygienists, serving as I-Smile™ coordinators in contracted Title V child health programs, physicians who recognize the importance of oral health, and the addition of fluoride varnish to the EPSDT periodicity schedule.
