Sonia is a mother of three kids of 14, 6 and 2 years old. In 2016, during the Zika epidemic in Puerto Rico, while pregnant with her third child, her first and only boy, Sonia was notified that she was positive to the virus. Anthony was born healthy, but he has been a participant of the Development Surveillance System for Infants Born from a mother with a Positive Evidence of Zika during Pregnancy to make sure he receives the services he needs while growing and developing.
In 2017, Sonia started working as a Family Support Advocate for the development surveillance system. She brings a unique perspective as a mother and as part of the staff. By being a participant she can relate with the families like no one else. She’s a great support for families. Sonia has become a leader in her family, church and the community participating in activities and workshos about Zika and many other topics related to CSHCN.She also promoted the Development Surveillance System's service and te Children with Special Healthcare Needs Program as well. Sonia has been a great support not only for families, her contributions to the prgram has made a great diference in the qaliy of the services that are offered to the families, and has strengthened many other areas of the program.
