Meet the Authors
Carter Reads the Newspaper - The child of two formerly enslaved people, Carter G. Woodson was born ten years after the end of the Civil War and went on to become the father of Black History Month. Though his father could not read, he believed in its importance. So Carter read the newspaper to him every day. Later on, while working in the coal mines as a teenager, Carter met a man named Oliver Jones, who asked him to read to him and the other miners. His journey would take him many more years, but he was set on spreading the history of his people.
