Alan R. Bailey is an Associate Professor and Head of the Teaching Resources Center at East Carolina University’s Joyner Library (Greenville, NC). Over his 35-year career as a librarian, Alan has served as a public school librarian, a branch manager of a public library, and has worked in community college and university libraries. For more than 20 of those years, he has been directly responsible for developing collections for young children. Professor Bailey is the author of the book, “Building a Core Print Collection for Preschoolers” and considers serving on the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Jury and the Randolph Caldecott Award Committee two of his career highlights. A native of Washington, NC, he received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and advanced degrees from East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University. He has served as an active member of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee for 14 years, and is currently the committee’s Chair-Elect and Chair of the Program Committee.
