The Massachusetts Library System (MLS) is partnering with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health to provide staff trainings for public libraries on mental illness and homelessness and build relationships with Homeless Outreach staff in communities served by the Project for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH). This partnership evolved out of a series of Social Services Forums facilitated by MLS. In addition to the partnership with the DHM/PATH, MLS has offered trainings for librarians on compassion fatigue, mindfulness, and Mental Health First Aid. The project was initiated with a statewide survey to assess librarians’ interest to partner with social workers. This program will also cover resources for professional development to better serve patrons experiencing mental illness and homelessness. The MLS/DMH/PATH partnership serves as a model that can be replicated for other public library/public health collaborations.
