The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) fundamentally changed how Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) must operate through implementation of the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) on October 1, 2019. CMS’ core intent with PDPM was “to better ensure that resident care decisions appropriately reflect each resident’s actual care needs, we believe it is important to remove, to the extent possible, service-based metrics from the SNF PPS and derive payment from verifiable resident characteristics”. CMS views the PDPM as part of their broader shift from volume to value by eliminating the RUGs therapy minutes-based metric. This session will discuss strategies providers may consider while retooling therapy programs under PDPM by focusing on achieving similar or better outcomes.
