Compliance with life safety code requirements continues to be one of the leading challenges facing long term care facilities . In July 2016, CMS adopted the 2012 NFPA 101 Life Safety Code (LSC) and the 2012 NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code (HCFC). These standards are designed, first and foremost, to protect people and minimize the effects of fire and related hazards. The HCFC additionally sets standards specific to health care facilities to curtail hazards from fire, explosion, and electricity. Deciphering the various LSC/HCFC requirements is an intricate process. Survey enforcement of these codes began on November 1, 2016. The revised survey includes over 50 new K tags , new surveyor forms, and numerous changes to the survey process itself. More than 90% of facilities received a deficiency, with many receiving more than 10. CMS also has begun surveying facility disaster management plans and citing numerous facilities for failures in programming, resulting in E-tags.
Using real-life examples and survey scenarios, this program will explore CMS expectations for nursing centers specifically. We’ll review code changes, including the increased inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements; surveyor guidance; and common violations, as well as discuss practical suggestions for compliance. Designed specifically for long term care facilities , this seminar is recommended for nursing center administrators, facility managers, maintenance supervisors, and directors of environmental services.
