Appropriately utilizing staging tools for residents with dementia is vital to promoting quality of life for residents and job satisfaction for team members. For residents, ability-focused staging allows the maximization of abilities and independence in ADLs and communication, contributing to improved quality of life. For care providers, staging empowers team members to have meaningful interactions with each resident, increasing job satisfaction and easing the burden of care. In addition to the obvious human benefits, utilizing staging tools can contribute to regulatory compliance with the IMPACT Act, annual surveys, and quality measures as well as reimbursement implications in PDPM. With the “silver wave” headed our way, now more than ever providers should be experts in caring for those living with dementia.
