Feelings Matter Most - Auditing Quality of Interactions not Quality of Processes
Dr. David Sheard, UK Founder of Dementia Care Matters, has for 24 years pioneered The Butterfly Model of Care. The Butterfly Model centres on the necessity to appraise emotional intelligence in all staff, to constantly measure quality of interactions and to eliminate all the ‘ them and us ‘ features. The Butterfly Model featured by Professor Cathy Greenblat from the US in her new independent film “ We are Family “ launched November 2018.
Using QUIS, minute by minute interactions are rated as Positive Social, Positive Care, Neutral, Controlling or Abusive. Homes are then given an Accreditation rating.
The Qualitative Observational methodology ( QUIS ), originally published by David with Alzheimer’s Society UK, has been implemented in over 750 care homes in 5 countries. The findings will be shared by Dr. David Sheard alongside Peter Bewert, CEO, DCM, who implemented this in Australia and includes results from the first home in the US to adopt this, Isakson Living in Atlanta.
David is an emotional, passionate speaker with a number of UK TV series where he shared his heartfelt plea that “ All We Have Is Now “ to change dementia care. His startling qualitative and qualitative evidence i.e. 66% less falls in Butterfly Homes, 40% weight gain, less than 10% usage of anti psychotic medication has revolutionised people’s thinking.
Simple techniques will be shared with participants to identify five key types of interactions in staff and what it takes to shift these in a whole culture of a care team.
Just like a Butterfly starting in life as a dried up brown Chrysalis, so too staff can come alive in this model of care and through transforming their interactions like a butterfly to create true moments of connection.
