The graying of America requires us to deal with challenges such as the appropriate balance between quality of life, increased complexities and co-morbidities, patients’ right to choose, and available evidence supporting optimal pain management. Evidence and current practice guidelines support an engaged, transdisciplinary approach to effective pain management. This session will focus on the prevalence of pain in the elderly, the management of acute and chronic pain through pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions, and a review of current evidence for treatment guidelines. We will highlight how effective transdisciplinary teams with collaboration among medical, nursing, and rehab teams can provide enhanced quality of life and optimal function, and reduce dependency on opioids.

Learning Objectives:

• Compare their organizations approach to pain management to current evidence-based practice guidelines and regulatory requirements in the long term care and assisted living communities.
• Define at least four alternatives to pharmacologic interventions for pain management which may include but not be limited to complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM), physical medicine/rehabilitation and wellness approaches.
• Develop a trans-disciplinary approach to pain management while supporting patient-centered care for quality of life and maximum patient outcomes; including the prevention of drug diversion by staff in LTC environments.
