Clinical Care Practice
70th AHCA/NCAL Convention and Expo
Sleep is often overlooked as a contributor to challenges for many residents living in a care facility. Staff practices and environmental factors contribute to sleep fragmentation and disruption. A growing body of evidence is showing that these sleep disruptions can worsen pain, delay physical healing and contribute to distress that presents as psychological symptoms for people with dementia. Quality measures such as the number of individuals reporting pain, falls with injury and psychotropic medications may be impacted by these sleep challenges. There are simple screening tools and devices that can be used to assess sleep quality for individuals and to use this data to assess if systematic changes may be beneficial for residents, staff, and facility.
