While research and scholarly activity are the basis for our profession, recent trends in dental education and the increasing complexity of conducting research have threatened academic dental institutions as the “home” of oral, dental, and craniofacial research. NIH extramural funding to dental schools decreased 10% (30% controlling for inflation) from 2005 to 2014. This workshop will review these concerning trends and provide tools to dental faculty for becoming more competitive grant applicants, for mentoring research faculty, and for creating stronger linkages between the conduct of research and the dental education curriculum and clinical activities.

Learning Objectives:

• Gain important insights of a mentor-mentee relationship
• Describe the expectations for a new dental academic who is involved in research.
• Describe critical skills to collaborate with research faculty within ones' academic dental institution, across the academic health center, and with other research institutions.
