90 Minute Workshop
Educational Programs, Workshops, Seminars, New Idea Session, and Small Group Discussions
A festschrift (from the German “fest” for “celebration” and “schrift” for “writing”) is an academic tradition honoring a respected academic and presented during the honoree’s lifetime. This symposium will honor Dr. Rick Valachovic as he retires after 22 years of leading AADS/ADEA as Executive Director/President and CEO. The session will focus on virtue and dental education. The concept of virtue is highly applicable to dental education. Virtue traditionally has been defined in various ways, usually promoting a moral code of some kind. Aristotle introduced the notion that each person has an innate responsibility to strive, develop and become his or her best self. A virtuous life is the way to human flourishing, or what Aristotle called “eudaimonia.” This symposium will focus on human flourishing in dental education to ensure that dentistry continues to be a learned profession, developing leaders at all levels, strengthening dentistry’s participation in interprofessional education and patient care, and promoting diversity and inclusion.
