Collaboration is essential to developing new models to assess overall competency, "entrustability" and readiness for practice. This session will introduce concepts of assessment of competency, readiness for practice and entrustability from other health professions and new models being developed in the United States and abroad, and will provide opportunities for the audience to participate in collaborative efforts to change assessment in dentistry, including evaluation of entrustability, and open new paths to licensure. A national expert will present concepts and emerging innovations in medical education, two dentistry examples will be discussed, and the audience will be challenged through discussion and debate with a panel to change assessment in dental education through collaboration.

Learning Objectives:

• Review assessment theory in competency-based education in health professions, guiding principles, challenges and opportunities for innovation through collaboration with other health professions.
• Define, compare and contrast entrustable professional activities, competencies and milestones, and describe how an EPA framework for assessment of competency and readiness for practice could be implemented in dentistry.
• Define and describe portfolio-based assessment of competency and how this strategy has been used as a basis for clinical licensure decisions.
