E-024 - Utilizing Community Opportunities to Enhance Interprofessional Experiences for our Students

Community health care opportunities, such as Mission of Mercy events, have the potential to increase interprofessional experiences for our students in multiple health care fields. In the increasing complexity of our patients’ medical and social backgrounds, our students have an obligation to consider all aspects of care, beyond addressing the acute need that brings patients to the dental chair. Participants will learn how to approach recruiting other programs involved in health care (medicine, pharmacy, social work) to provide a more complete picture of patient-focused health care and identify which programs they can work with at their institutions.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify current community dentistry opportunities existing at their institution or in their community.
• Identify which programs may be potential partnerships for interprofessional collaboration.
• Strategize ways to involve all aspects of health care in collaborative learning environments.
