TL-045 - When Students Own the Classroom: Innovative Approach to Collaborative Study (Limited Attendance of 15)

An innovative approach for student development was explored through a pediatric dentistry honors clerkship. In the pilot year, specific students selected discussed topics of interest outside the standard pediatric dentistry curriculum. "Parent management" was selected as the focus this semester. Students chose individual topics within the parameters of the theme, including vaccinations, fluoride safety, mercury, gluten intolerance, sedation and radiographs. Members presented bi-weekly to the small group and combined collected data to create a collaboration for presentation to the school in the final week. An outcome assessment was given to discuss the benefit this project had on student learning.

Learning Objectives:

• Develop a program at their institution implementing the content discussed.
• Guide a small student-led group, implement directed learning and help students hone presentation skills.
• Create selection criteria for student membership in the clerkship.
