You will learn about assessment for learning educational research and how Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and College of Physicians and Surgeons have collaborated to make major evidence-based revisions to its assessment system in order to better drive student learning and wellness and to enhance the learning environment. Changes include adopting preclinical pass/fail grading structures, implementing unproctored, off-site, time-flexible course exams to help students to focus on their professional identity formation. We also updated our first semester assessments structure to include scheduling exams during “synthesis and assessment weeks,” allowing students to retake exams until mastery is met, and creating collaborative post-exam review sessions.
