Dental education is committed to providing students with a comprehensive, personalized approach to patient care. Nicotine addiction and substance abuse disorders are a potential part of patient care but where do you put this content into an already crowded curriculum? This hands-on workshop will give you practical addiction education strategies. You will collaborate with your peers, explore interprofessional assessment and referral strategies, and formulate educational approaches using a curriculum map model. Utilizing a case-based, interactive workshop format, you will explore challenges and strategies on how to address the need for addiction education and clinical competency.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify possible ‘threads’ of addiction education, including communication skills training and clinical competency, within their school’s curriculum.
• Discuss models other schools are using to integrate addiction education in both didactic and clinical settings.
• Describe strategies to utilize and integrate inter-collaborative patient care with the goal of identifying, intervening and referring patients who present with addition disorders.
