A-006 - Incorporating a Faculty Calibration Program Into a Dental Hygiene Program

Due to the variability in dental hygiene instructors’ education and clinical experience, calibration is critical. The clinic coordinators at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences developed a calibration program consisted of three formalized calibration sessions led by the clinic coordinators. The program consisted of topics such as assessing student performance, instrumentation technique, powered instruments, etc. Pre- and post-surveys were given to the faculty members to determine their perceptions of the program. This course will include the benefits of faculty calibration as well as the negative effects a dental hygiene program can experience when faculty members are not calibrated.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss the importance of faculty calibration in a dental hygiene program.
• Develop potential steps to develop a faculty calibration program at various dental hygiene programs.
• Discuss the potential challenges and ways to overcome challenges clinical faculty when implementing a calibration program.
