Intestinal inflammation, which occurs after distention or vascular compromise, commonly occurs in intestinal diseases causing equine colic. The cascade of inflammatory events in the intestine during and after surgery affects function, healing and systemic health. Understanding the cellular and molecular response of the intestine and other organs to ischemic injury is key to effectively treating the primary problem and resulting systemic insults. The surgeon’s appraisal of the secondary intestinal injury and the horse’s clinical response after surgery is critical to determine the prognosis.
