Dr. Julie Smith is a graduate of UC Berkeley where she completed her undergraduate studies and a graduate of UC Davis veterinary school (1992). Following veterinary school, Dr. Smith completed an internship at North Carolina State University, a residency in small animal surgery at the University of Georgia, and served as an Assistant Professor of small animal surgery at Kansas State University before joining SAGE in 1997. She became a board-certified surgeon in 1997.
Dr. Smith became certified by the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in 2008 and earned her MBA at St. Mary’s College in 2013. Dr. Smith has taken an active role in the management of SAGE Veterinary Centers since 2002, became a Managing Partner in 2010, and served as SAGE’s Medical Director from 2013 to 2018. As Medical Director, Dr. Smith led by example in setting the standards for a high level of veterinary medicine. She was responsible for recruiting and hiring veterinary specialists to join the SAGE team and has always been an advocate for continual learning and training opportunities. She oversaw the mentoring program within SAGE to support new doctors and externally, she leads and organizes the annual SAGE Symposium, the largest private continuing education event in the Bay Area to support more than 700 primary veterinarians and their staff. In 2018 she stepped into a new role as Chief Strategy Officer to help determine the future course of our state-of-the-art hospitals. Dr. Smith works directly with SAGE Partners and the executive and leadership teams to chart the course of growth across our state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals.
Dr. Smith is the Treasurer for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and Past President of the Veterinary Specialist Awareness and Outreach Project (VetSOAP).
