This introduces the basics of using QGIS, a free GIS software that can be used in PCs and MACs, and online mapping with the WorldMap platform.
QGIS: To illustrate the use of QGIS to maps and symbolize data with spatial attributes two sources of free datasets will be used: the China Historical GIS version 6 (221 BCE-1911, and 1990) and the G. William Skinner datasets for late imperial China, modern China and Japan. All are free downloads. There is also an online spatiotemporal gazetteer for Chinese place names in past and present.
WorldMap: WorldMap is an open-access, open-source platform covering the globe. It currently has 29,000 data layers added by users and 70,000 remote service layers. This will show how to create personal map collections, find and add map layers, and upload the user’s own spatial data.
