Digital Technologies Expo
The crucial first step in the digital analysis of objects of humanistic inquiry is the construction of a digital version of the object. This requires a data model to represent the objects being explored. Because the design of the model determines the range of analytic approaches one can bring to it, getting the model right requires much thought about the domain and about the questions one wants to bring to that domain. This session will explore the basics of historical data abstraction and the designing of databases for historical inquiry. The session will emphasize the concepts behind relational databases in particular as a flexible but powerful approach to modelling historical experience. Examples from the China Biographical Database will illustrate both the design issues and the analytic possibilities for relational database construction.
