Brian S. Martin DMD, MHCDS, FAAPD
Dr. Martin received his bachelor’s degree (BA) from Colgate University and his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. In 2014 he completed a Master of Science in Healthcare Delivery in a joint program of the Tuck School of Business and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College.
Dr. Martin is currently serving Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA) at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. In this role, he is responsible for derivation and execution of the hospital’s strategic plan as well as serving as the executive responsible for the Department of Medical Affairs. His scope of responsibility includes hospital-wide Quality, Safety, Regulatory, Outcomes, and Patient Experience performance. The hospital’s Community and Population Health efforts also fall under his purview Dr. Martin serves on the Medical Executive Committee, Clinical Quality/Patient Safety Committee, and both the Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation Boards.
In addition to the VPMA role, Dr. Martin serves as the President of the Pennsylvania Pediatric Health Network, a pediatric-specific clinically integrated network (CIN). The first of its kind in Pennsylvania, Dr. Martin and his team have taken the CIN from inception to a functioning network over the last 18 months. For UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the PPHN serves as a critical component of our Population Health strategy and is actively engaged with the four founding member practices in managing Quality, Outcomes, and Total Cost of Care at a population level in Western Pennsylvania. The PPHN network currently has approximately 80,000 covered pediatric lives.
Clinically, Dr. Martin maintains a hospitalist pediatric dental/surgical practice at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he has also previously served as Division Chief for 15 years and Residency Program Director for eight years.
In conjunction with the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology, Dr. Martin participates as a Principal Investigator on an NIH-funded P50 program grant to study the effect of craniofacial growth/development and its relationship to middle ear disease.
Additional research collaboration with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery includes the effect of bone grafting upon dento-facial growth and development, as well as longitudinal outcomes from pediatric facial trauma.
Division of Pediatric Dentistry research and QI projects include: telemedicine utilization to reduce oral health disparities, and innovation in healthcare delivery through embedded oral health providers within the primary care/medical home.
Dr. Martin serves on the Advisory Board of Variety the Children’s Charity of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Martin resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Dr, Amy Nevin, and two sons, Gates and Luke. He and his family enjoy outdoor activities (backpacking/boating/fishing) and adventure races.
