The art of soft-tissue reconstruction for maxillofacial defects continues to evolve, and the incorporation of tissue expanders into the armamentarium of reconstructive surgeons is a necessity. Significant soft-tissue defects secondary to traumatic or oncologic sequelae pose a difficult scenario that require the reconstructive surgeon to have a working knowledge of all the possible tools at their disposal in order to obtain a functional and esthetically pleasing end result. The indications, outcomes and possible complications will be discussed. The utilization of tissue expanders will be demonstrated as it relates to complex maxillofacial reconstruction.
