Few CRNAs are familiar with the clinical use of electroencephalography (EEG) spectrogram anesthetic signature analysis when monitoring depth of anesthesia. Because EEG monitors the brain-state of cortical and subcortical areas of the brain, an understanding of the connection between the EEG spectrogram and the differing molecular mechanisms of action of common anesthetics can enable CRNAs at the bedside to use EEG spectrogram anesthetic signature analysis as a monitor of anesthetic depth. This presentation introduces the nurse anesthetist to the clinical use of EEG spectrogram anesthetic signature analysis as an anesthetic depth monitor and provides the CRNA with references for further inquiry and study.
