The issue of a Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) order in the operating room remains controversial for many healthcare providers. For decades, healthcare providers automatically suspended DNR orders for patients scheduled for surgery. In some places, this is still the culture. However, patients have the right to autonomy when making decisions about their DNR code status, and other advanced directives, in the perioperative environment. Participants will gain an increased level of awareness regarding perioperative advanced directives and skills related to the required reconsideration of advanced directives prior to surgery.
